KITCHEN ADVENTURES WITH THE LITTLE GUYS: What To Do With Your Sourdough Starter

Ever wonder what to do with all the extra sourdough starter after you bake bread? Come explore all the creative ways you can use your extra starter in different recipes. Every starter is different…and so is every person’s kitchen adventure!

 

 

What and Why of Sourdough Bread

What is the difference between sourdough bread and store bought conventional bread? What is a starter and how does it work? Is sourdough bread good for us?

 

Come join us to get these questions answered and to learn more about the history of bread, health benefits of sourdough, and  the role of starter in bread making.

Take home a delicious loaf of sourdough and share with family and friends.

 

Excenter Learning is an education program under Hemato Institute whose mission is to educate, teach and inspire people to change the way they think about health, exercise and food. Hemato Institute is a nonprofit research-based organization with an aim to bring awareness to health-related issues and provide solutions to the general public through research and education.

FIRE CIDER WORKSHOP

Fire cider is a spicy vinegar that herbalists have used as a favorite wintertime remedy and to ward off illness for decades. Participants will make a pint size jar which will be good for use for up to a year if stored in the refrigerator. Class lasts between 30-45 minutes including time for questions and answers. Limited to 16 participants per class.

SHRUBS WORKSHOP

Shrubs are fermented beverages that are both refreshing and healthy. In this workshop, you will learn how to make old-fashioned shrubs at home using fruit and herbs and the health benefits of incorporating shrubs in your life. Participants will sample various shrubs and take home a small jar of shrub. Class lasts between 30-45 minutes including time for questions and answers. Limited to 16 participants per class.

THE MICROSETTA INITIATIVE: CREATING A GLOBAL MAP OF THE HUMAN GUT MICRIOBIOME

As the world's largest citizen science microbiome project, The Microsetta Initiative (TMI) aims to collect microbiome samples and rich phenotypic data that spans populations across the globe, and to marry these collections with educational outreach about microbiome science. As part of a collaboration with Danone (aka Danon), TMI has begun to explore the effects of consuming fermented foods on the diversity and composition of the human gut microbiome. In addition to highlighting some interesting findings from that work, this talk will outline the goals of TMI, why the research is needed and how we go about out studies, some fascinating patterns, and how you can get involved.
